Buick
Buick’s place in the automotive world has shifted from the elderly persons car of the mid-20th century to a brand focused on attainable luxury and quiet refinement. Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, it is the oldest active American automotive brand and served as the cornerstone upon which General Motors was built. Historically, Buick represented a step above Chevrolet but stayed just below the overt opulence of Cadillac. In recent years, the brand has undergone a significant visual and strategic pivot, introducing a minimalist tri-shield logo and the Exceptional by Design philosophy, which aims to attract a younger demographic through sleek crossover styling and high-tech interiors. JD Power, and other consumer data platforms, seem to indicate Buick has executed brilliantly. Buick continues to demonstrate that their vehicles perform better than most in their class--and even outperforming other GM brands.
Buick isn't without its Faults
Modern Buicks like the Enclave and Envision are praised for their QuietTuning technology and comfortable ride quality. However, several issues of note for service and maintenance have emerged across the 2021–2026 model years that owners should monitor. In larger models like the Enclave, transmission hesitation and delayed shifting remain common complaints. Owners often report a shudder during low-speed acceleration or a burning smell, which can indicate fluid degradation or internal wear in the 9-speed transmissions. GMs' 9-speed is a corporate common component used across the models and brands.
Buicks current lineup often focuses on the small-displacement turbocharged engines found in the Envista and Encore GX. While these 1.2L and 1.3L engines are efficient, they are prone to purge valve and fuel rail issues, sometimes occurring within the first 5,000 miles. However, as these vehicles age, without preventative maintenance are prone to the same failures. A frequent symptom is the Engine Power Reduced message on the dashboard, which places the vehicle in a limp mode to prevent damage. This is often triggered by throttle body carbon buildup or sensor malfunctions that confuse the powertrain control module.
Some initial customers, shops, and long-term owners have dubbed this the Extreme Complication Era for Buick. The transition away from the legendary 3.8L V6 toward highly stressed, small-displacement engines with complex emissions systems is seen by some as a trade-off in long-term durability. For instance, the LIH and LBP engines may exhibit a deep thudding noise under load when cold. While GM has released bulletins stating this is a normal characteristic of these power-dense engines, many technicians view it as a symptom of the high cylinder pressures required to move heavy crossover bodies with small engines.
Software Integration and Digital Health
As Buick moves toward an all-electric future and integrates the GM internally developed software platform, digital maintenance has become as important as oil changes. The introduction of the 30-inch ultra-wide display in the 2025 and 2026 Enclave has brought a new set of challenges involving Google built-in services.
Common digital symptoms include black screen events where the entire dashboard and infotainment display fail to initialize upon startup. This is documented in GM Bulletin PIT6393A, which covers various 2024–2025 models and instructs technicians to perform specific module resets rather than hardware replacements. Furthermore, Buick owners are now increasingly dependent on over-the-air (OTA) updates. If an update fails to download or install correctly, it can prevent vehicle modules from powering down, resulting in a parasitic drain that kills the battery overnight.
Our service department treats these software anomalies with the same rigor as mechanical failures. We utilize specialized programming tools to ensure stable voltage during system flashes, as even a minor voltage spike can brick a sensitive communication module. Whether your Buick is experiencing a laggy interface, Bluetooth connectivity drops, or a Take control of the vehicle now notification that won't clear, we focus on the underlying network health to keep your vehicle functioning as intended.
